Free Training for Performers in Theatre for Young Audiences

COSTS

The training is completely free to attend, but you should be able to attend every day.

We’re also able to offer 8 bursaries of £270 each, to support trainees for whom cost is a barrier to accessing training. See ‘How To Apply’ below for details of how to access this financial support.

ABOUT CUCKOO COLLECTIVE

This training is led by Artistic Director Katerina Pushkin and Musical Director Beth Hopkins, alongside other musicians and performers who collaborate with us. It takes place in one of the communities we serve, where there’s also a chance to watch our recent responsive music theatre production, Ariel On The Cliff.

The training looks at:

• Collaborative improvisation

• The value of playfulness

• Shaping stories for participatory theatre

• Soundtracking: weaving sound/music into the text

• Character development

• Musical clowning

• Music and movement interaction

• Sensory effects

• Facilitating children’s engagement

• Accessible and inclusive storytelling

• Child-led performance

• Creating space for the child’s voice

We’ll share Cloud Cuckoo Land’s approach, which is playful pick ‘n’ mix drawn from varied methods and styles including Stanislavsky, Laban, Gaulier, Jazz, experimental music and folk. There’ll be plenty of chances for you to try out different techniques in a fun, informal, and non-judgemental setting.

We’re also keen to learn from you and support your development as a performer: so there’ll be opportunities to share your own skills, play creatively together, and explore what your distinctive creative voice adds to the world of theatre for young audiences. You’ll have the chance to share a short participatory piece which you’ve developed, and ask for feedback from our directors and the Collective as a whole.

PRACTICALITIES

The training takes place between 10am and 6.30pm on 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th January, with exact times varying slightly each day. We’ve also allowed time on 6th January when you can develop your own participatory piece independently.

The venue is between five and ten minutes’ walk from the centre of Northfield in South Birmingham, where you’ll find a supermarket and lots of shops and cafes. The venue itself is wheelchair accessible with disabled parking spaces (for more details see Cuckoo Collective Access Statement, above)

PRACTICALITIES continues:

The venue has a kitchen with microwave, toaster and kettle. It’s got a car park, and buses 18, 61 and 44 stop very nearby (buses 38, 39, 44, 48, 49, 63, 144 and X20 are also within walking distance).
